« 7 February 2007 | 22:17 | default, danny, stories | 2 Comments »

I can’t remember the exact date, or even year - but i think it was sometime in late ‘82 that i crawled upstairs into The Tent Room at Peter’s house. A secluded space, 7ft X 7ft., with a tent-like ceiling angle, basically a dormer, curtain for a door, a non-room. matress on floor, kafka, ganja, […]

By D.F. Wilson - Encore Magazine - October 30 1986
There are four guys in town. Chances are you’ve seen them around. You might not give them a second glance. But there’s something special about these guys — they have a band: the Squirrels — and, cliche as it is, they have a dream.
In the years […]

30th Century Annalope (sic)
Like a cross between Sun Ra and Earth Wind and Fire, a kind of hoegrown P-Funk. They were about 5 years ahead of the Squirrels, and the story was they all worked for UPS. Saw them at Greenfield Ampitheater, and the Arts Center. Very mind expanding, for Wilmington.
You don’t believe?

This is a list of Wilmington bands, starting in the ’70’s through the ’90’s. The idea is to explode this list into even more memories. You can add a comment about any band on the list, or a new name (and comment). We’ll make a new page for that band, linked from here, with the […]

Tell me about yourself

Well dear Doctor,
The Squirrels were Peter and Paul, who found Danny, Matt and Lisa. Then Lisa was replaced by Russ, who was replaced by Lynn, who was not replaced. Paul left for awhile, but came back. Then the Squirrels stopped. The spirit hung around.
It’s all rather multi-faceted. Hard to get one’s head around. So […]

I’ll stop the world and melt with you

The Squirrels fashioned themselves in the nouveau of the early ’80’s. They didn’t come out of nowhere though. In high school they would have been digging everything from AOR (remember Album Oriented Rock?) to Reggae to Art & Progressive Rock to Jazz-Rock and Ethnic Fusion. Even KISS. They sensed the aesthetic vacuum of the […]

The Squirrels were an original rock band in Wilimington, NC in the mid-1980’s. They set local precedents, taking cues from DIY, power pop, post-punk, and reggae. Along with their friends, they launched a creative collective, spearheading the downtown club era that followed in their wake.
The cast:

Peter D - guitar, vocals, songs, art, keyboards

Paul Daniels - […]

Wilmington is situated on the lower Cape Fear River, in the southeastern North Carolina tidewater. It was a port from colonial times, and pivotal in the conflicts that forged the nation. Wrightsville Beach lays 9 miles east. This corner on the coast is surrounded by a hundred miles of swamp, pine forest, pig and tobacco […]
